The Hammer Museum at UCLA has announced the appointment of Zoë Ryan as its new director, succeeding Ann Philbin, who has led the institution for 25 years. Ryan's transition into this prominent role will take place on January 1, 2025, following Philbin's departure in November 2024.
Ryan arrives at the Hammer Museum after serving as the Daniel W. Dietrich, II Director at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at the University of Pennsylvania. During her tenure there, she distinguished herself by developing a highly regarded exhibition program, establishing an annual art commission, and fostering partnerships within the university and the broader arts community. Ryan’s strategic vision revitalized the ICA, emphasizing community engagement and collaboration.
Her previous role as the John H. Bryan Chair and Curator of Architecture and Design at the Art Institute of Chicago saw her overseeing a vast collection of over 250,000 objects and curating significant exhibitions, including the second Istanbul Design Biennial in 2014.
In her welcoming remarks, Marcy Carsey, chair of the Hammer’s Board of Directors, expressed excitement about Ryan’s leadership, highlighting her track record of supporting bold artistic endeavours. Ryan echoed this sentiment, praising the Hammer's role in Los Angeles' cultural landscape and its commitment to addressing critical contemporary issues such as climate change and social justice.
Philbin, the outgoing director, reflected on her extraordinary journey at the museum, expressing confidence in Ryan's capabilities to guide the Hammer into its next chapter. UCLA Interim Chancellor Darnell Hunt and Lionel Popkin, interim dean of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture, also voiced their enthusiasm for Ryan’s appointment, anticipating that her leadership will elevate the museum's innovative programming and strengthen its cultural significance.
With a reputation for championing experimental art and fostering strong community connections, Ryan’s arrival marks a new era for the Hammer Museum, promising to invigorate its mission and impact within the vibrant arts ecosystem of Los Angeles. Her future initiatives, including a forthcoming publication on the Cuban-Mexican designer Clara Porset, further underline her commitment to advancing artistic discourse.
As the Hammer Museum prepares for this transition, the anticipation for Ryan's vision and leadership is palpable, positioning the institution to continue its trajectory as a pivotal player in contemporary art.
