World‘s First Stretchable Display
LG Display has just revealed a breakthrough in display technology: the world’s first Stretchable display, capable of expanding up to 50% – the highest elongation rate in the industry. Presented at LG Science Park in Seoul on November 8, this cutting-edge prototype was demonstrated to over 100 South Korean industry, academic, and research leaders involved in a national Stretchable display project.
This pioneering 12-inch display stretches up to 18 inches, offering a high resolution of 100ppi with full RGB colour. Compared to its 2022 iteration, which stretched only up to 20%, this enhanced prototype more than doubles in stretchability, opening up new design possibilities and raising its future commercial potential.
The Stretchable display is built with advanced technology, including a silicon-based substrate similar to those in contact lenses, a new wiring structure, and micro-LEDs as small as 40 micrometres. This engineering allows it to endure over 10,000 stretches while maintaining image clarity in extreme temperatures and conditions. Not only thin and lightweight, the display can also adhere to irregularly curved surfaces, making it versatile for applications across fashion, wearables, and automotive industries.
LG Display showcased numerous concept applications, including a wearable display for firefighters' uniforms, offering real-time data, and an adaptable automotive panel. As the lead company for South Korea’s national Stretchable display project since 2020, LG Display has successfully developed core technology that could lead the next generation of display markets. “We will continue to build a sustainable future display ecosystem through close cooperation between South Korean industry, academia, and research stakeholders,” said Soo-young Yoon, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display.
With this new Stretchable display, LG Display sets a new standard, paving the way for innovative uses and a dynamic future in display technology.
