A Legendary Legacy Revived

Originally designed by Jorg Hysek, the 222 was a trailblazer in the 1970s, blending luxury sports watch aesthetics with technical brilliance. With its integrated bracelet, monobloc case, and distinctive fluted bezel, it became an instant classic. The ultra-thin Caliber 1120 movement added to its acclaim, symbolising Vacheron Constantin’s craftsmanship.

Following the successful 2022 re-edition in yellow gold, the Maison now introduces the steel version, sure to capture the hearts of both collectors and modern enthusiasts.

The New Steel Historiques 222

The steel Historiques 222 maintains the original design while adding subtle modern touches. Its 37mm stainless steel case is complemented by an integrated bracelet with redesigned joints and a triple-blade clasp for improved ergonomics. The navy blue dial—a departure from the gold version’s champagne tone—features luminescent white gold hour markers and hands, evoking the historical model’s tritium glow. The repositioned date window enhances balance, while the vintage-style “AUTOMATIC” inscription adds nostalgic charm.

Modernised Mechanics

Inside, the Caliber 2455/2 powers the watch with precision and elegance. This ultra-thin movement operates at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) for improved accuracy and offers a 40-hour power reserve. Visible through a sapphire crystal case-back engraved with a 270th-anniversary signature, the 22k gold oscillating weight is engraved with the original 222 logo and echoes the bezel’s fluted design.

A Watch for the Ages

Priced at CHF32,000 (approximately €30,080), the Historiques 222 in steel is expected to be highly sought after. Its durable design and contemporary steel construction make it an ideal daily wear for collectors who value understated luxury. While easier to access than the Patek Philippe Nautilus or Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, it retains the exclusivity and craftsmanship synonymous with Vacheron Constantin.

With its timeless design and technical upgrades, the Steel Historiques 222 is set to be a highlight of the Maison’s 270th-anniversary celebrations and a must-have for discerning collectors.

A Look Ahead

The Steel Historiques 222 kicks off Vacheron Constantin’s year-long celebration of its rich legacy. More exciting releases are anticipated throughout 2025, each showcasing the Maison’s dedication to artistry and innovation. The new steel 222 is available exclusively through Vacheron Constantin boutiques worldwide.
