Christian Müller, Technical Project Manager at Porsche, explains the origin of the Taycan Turbo GT: “We’ve come to realize that some of our customers are looking for a top model with an even higher position,” he says. “An increase in power is one of the key components of a derivative developed for high performance, which is why we focused on that at a very early stage of development.” The pursuit of performance led to the development of features that provide an additional 115 kW of thrust for up to two seconds compared to the Turbo S, making the Taycan Turbo GT a force to be reckoned with.
Electric motors operate differently from traditional gasoline engines, making power boosts a unique challenge. Porsche's solution came in the form of a redesigned pulse inverter. The new inverter operates with 900 A, a significant leap from the 600 A of the Turbo S, which enables the Taycan Turbo GT to channel even more energy to the motor. By incorporating silicon carbide as a semiconductor material, Porsche achieved higher efficiency, greater power delivery, and smoother performance. This development, as Müller points out, is one of the most significant breakthroughs for the vehicle.
The Turbo GT also boasts an optimised two-speed transmission at the rear axle. With higher torque input, Porsche's engineers reinforced the transmission housing and strengthened the internal components, such as gear pairs and clutch, to handle the increased power output. The result is a top track speed of 305 km/h, further enhanced by a revised front axle drive system.
When engaged in Launch Control with Overboost, the Taycan Turbo GT delivers an astonishing 815 kW (1,108 PS) for a brief two seconds, ensuring explosive acceleration. Even in Attack Mode, the vehicle maintains a formidable 700 kW (952 PS) for up to ten seconds, providing an edge that few vehicles can match. Porsche's commitment to high performance is also reflected in its advanced aerodynamics, lightweight ceramic brakes, and exclusive 21-inch forged wheels, all contributing to the car's exceptional performance.
For those seeking even more track-focused performance, the Taycan Turbo GT can be equipped with the Weissach package, which sheds weight by removing non-essential features such as rear seats. This makes the model 70 kilograms lighter, increasing its agility and performance on the track. The Weissach package also allows the Taycan Turbo GT to reach 100 km/h in just 2.2 seconds, a mere tenth of a second faster than the standard model.
This variant is a testament to Porsche’s dedication to precision, with a design inspired by the high-performance requirements of motorsport. Drawing influence from Porsche’s Formula E cars, the Taycan Turbo GT incorporates innovative features like the Attack Mode, which provides up to 120 kW (163 PS) more power for ten seconds, available once the battery is above 30% charge and at an optimal temperature. This added boost enables exceptional acceleration while keeping thermal stress in check during high-demand driving sessions.
The Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package has already made its mark on race tracks around the world. In 2024, it set record-breaking lap times at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Laguna Seca, and the Shanghai International Circuit. These performances are a clear indicator of the Turbo GT’s capabilities in extreme conditions.
For drivers looking to push the limits even further, Porsche’s racecourse mode preconditions the car’s battery and powertrain to ensure optimal performance at track temperatures, such as those found at the Nürburgring. Christian Müller adds, “There’s no need to warm up the Taycan Turbo GT, which is traditionally recommended for sports cars with a conventional drive.” This feature speaks to the model’s readiness for instant performance, regardless of the conditions.
