Neil Armstrong’s 18K Gold Omega Speedmaster Could Fetch Over $2 Million

One of the most historically significant timepieces in space exploration history is set to go under the hammer next month. Neil Armstrong’s personally owned 18K gold Omega Speedmaster Professional, known as the “Tribute to Astronauts” watch, will be auctioned on April 17, 2025, at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This extraordinary watch (Ref. BA 145.022) is part of an exclusive series of 26 gold Speedmasters created by Omega in 1969 to honour NASA astronauts. Armstrong’s timepiece, bearing the engraving “Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, Gemini 8 – Apollo 11,” is particularly special, symbolising his role as the first man to walk on the moon.

The watch also features a unique caseback engraving: “To mark man’s conquest of space with time, through time, on time,” and is marked as No. 17 in the collection.

Crafted with an 18K gold case, the watch boasts a burgundy red aluminium inlay bezel and a solid gold dial stamped with “OM” (Or Massif), signifying solid gold construction. The hour markers are made from onyx and set in gold frames, while the hands feature black details, offering a striking contrast against the gold background.

Inside, the watch is powered by the Lemania-based calibre 861 movement, with a 21,600 vph ticking speed, 17 jewels, and a steel brake—demonstrating Omega’s exceptional watchmaking expertise.

The Apollo XI commemorative gold Speedmasters hold a revered place in horological and space history. The first 28 pieces were presented to U.S. President Richard Nixon, Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, and the 26 NASA astronauts who contributed to America’s space programme.

Armstrong’s gold Speedmaster remains one of the most prestigious, as it was gifted to the very man who took humanity’s first steps on the lunar surface.

Notably, Armstrong was photographed wearing this watch during his tenure as a professor at the University of Cincinnati, reinforcing its significance. The timepiece is accompanied by an official ‘Extract from the Archives’ certificate from Omega, further authenticating its provenance.

The auction will take place live at 6 PM ET on April 17, 2025. Bidders can participate in person, via telephone, or through the Invaluable live bidding platform.

Half of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to charitable causes chosen by Armstrong’s son, Mark Armstrong, ensuring that the late astronaut’s legacy continues to benefit humanity.

Given its rarity, historical importance, and direct connection to the first moonwalker, Armstrong’s Speedmaster is expected to fetch well over $2 million, making it one of the most valuable Omega Speedmasters ever auctioned.
