The Louis Vuitton Bed Trunk debuted in 1868 at the Exposition Universelle in Le Havre. Originally designed for travellers and explorers, the Bed Trunk provided a luxurious and practical solution for those venturing across the globe. Patented in 1885 by Georges Vuitton, this innovative piece quickly became one of the brand’s most celebrated travel accessories, known for its ability to convert from a trunk into a fully functional bed. It gained fame through explorers like Pierre Savorgant de Brazza, who purchased several for his expeditions, as well as notable figures such as the Marquis de Morès and Jacques Faure. Showcased at international exhibitions, the Bed Trunk became a favourite among adventurers and military officers, revolutionising the standard of comfort for those on the move.

In 2024, Louis Vuitton reintroduced this historic item with a contemporary twist. The Maison's men's creative director, Pharrell Williams, and women's collections artistic director, Nicolas Ghesquière, have each designed their versions of the modern Bed Trunk, blending tradition with modernity.

Pharrell’s design draws inspiration from an 1872 model, featuring a distressed striped canvas exterior with black aluminium hardware, giving the trunk a bold, vintage industrial look. The interior houses a jacquard mattress embroidered with his unique “LV Lovers” motif, reflecting his creative signature while maintaining Louis Vuitton’s luxury standards. Blond wood accents add a touch of warmth and sophistication to the design.

In contrast, Ghesquière’s version is influenced by the futuristic and sleek style of his 2023 Cruise Collection. His design features a streamlined exterior with a floral-patterned lining, presenting a playful yet elegant aesthetic. Both trunks embody a unique blend of old-world craftsmanship and modern luxury.

In addition to these bespoke versions, Louis Vuitton reimagined the classic Monogram edition, honouring the brand’s heritage with the iconic Monogram canvas synonymous with Louis Vuitton for over a century.

All three versions of the Bed Trunk feature an aluminium and beechwood frame, ensuring they are both sturdy and easy to assemble. The four-part memory foam mattress is designed for maximum comfort and is covered in waterproof cotton embroidered with the signature Monogram. Added conveniences include an adjustable headrest and a removable side table, making these trunks as functional as they are luxurious.

The reimagined Louis Vuitton Bed Trunk comes with a starting price of €160,000, offering an exclusive, collectable piece for those who appreciate history, craftsmanship, and the ultimate in luxury travel. This modern version not only honours Louis Vuitton’s pioneering legacy but also reaffirms its position as a leader in luxury innovation.
