Sergio Agüero, the former professional footballer and Olympic gold medalist, is set to make a one-time appearance as a Formula E driver, taking control of the Porsche 99X Electric.

This exciting moment will be part of an innovative Formula E content series called "Evo Sessions," where several celebrities will have the opportunity to drive current Formula E team cars.

The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, a factory-backed team, is partnering with Agüero, the former Manchester City star from Argentina. The team will provide him with racing training for a quick session.

The pinnacle of this experience will be a special Formula E event at the Miami Grand Prix course (March 5–6), where, under the mentorship of world champion Pascal Wehrlein, Agüero will drive the high-performance Porsche 99X Electric, which is the latest GEN3 Evo model driven by Wehrlein in the world championship.

“This is absolutely crazy: from footballer to racing driver in one of the fastest racing cars in the world,” “Every child is familiar with Porsche. The brand represents an iconic heritage, particularly in motorsport. With this in mind, I am absolutely delighted and would like to thank everyone involved for this unique opportunity. I want to learn as much as possible on my journey to Miami, and to represent the team as well as possible when we get there,” - says Agüero

The Porsche 99X Electric, an all-electric race car, boasts remarkable acceleration, going from 0 to 100 km/h in just under 2 seconds. It also features one of the most efficient electric drive systems globally.

Approximately half of the energy needed for a race is regenerated by the car itself through brake energy recuperation. Additionally, its advanced software enables the car to adjust its settings automatically for every corner on the track, ensuring maximum e-performance.

“Welcome to the team, Sergio! Training a non-motorsport athlete for such a challenge in such a short time is a huge task for us as a team, but also for him as an athlete. The 99X Electric is one of the best Formula racing cars in the world. To drive it demands a lot of respect and meticulous preparation. The project is a bit mad but also exciting and definitely innovative. We are looking forward to Miami and hope that the event can win a lot of new fans for our sport.” - Florian Modlinger, Director of Factory Motorsport Formula E at Porsche

As part of his preparation to become a one-off racing driver, Agüero is undergoing training on the track in road-going Porsche sports cars. He is receiving expert guidance from the Porsche e-sports works team and testing his skills in the state-of-the-art Porsche Motorsport simulators.

He is also being supported by reigning Formula E world champion Pascal Wehrlein, whose mentorship will be crucial during the culminating Miami event. Wehrlein, who claimed the Formula E world title with Porsche last July, has recently achieved a remarkable three consecutive pole positions.

Fans can follow Agüero’s journey through Porsche’s social media channels, including Instagram and WhatsApp (Porsche Motorsport). Agüero himself can be found on Instagram.

The 2024/2025 season marks Porsche’s sixth year in Formula E. Alongside the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, the American customer team Andretti Formula E will also race the Porsche 99X Electric of the latest GEN3 Evo generation.

With Cupra Kiro joining this season, it will be the first time Porsche has two customer teams in the series, with one using the previous GEN3 technology. Formula E continues to provide Porsche with valuable insights that contribute to the development of its production sports cars.
