Mercedes-Benz, a long-time supplier of vehicles to the Vatican, has unveiled the first all-electric Popemobile, designed specifically for Pope Francis. This innovative vehicle will make its debut for the 2025 Jubilee, an event held every 25 years, drawing millions of pilgrims to Rome.

The new Popemobile is based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and represents a significant step toward sustainability. Its electric drivetrain, customised for the slow speeds required during public appearances, aligns with Pope Francis' environmental advocacy in his encyclical Laudato Si. The vehicle was developed in collaboration with the Vatican, ensuring it meets the Pope's specific needs.

A Milestone for Mercedes-Benz and Electromobility

Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, expressed pride in this historic development, stating that it highlights the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The Popemobile serves as a symbol of Mercedes-Benz's goal to achieve a net-carbon-neutral fleet by 2039.

Tailored Design for Unique Requirements

The electric Popemobile features a pearl white exterior and a host of customisations. The rear bench seat was replaced with a central, height-adjustable seat to provide flexibility for addressing audiences. Additional passenger seats were integrated, while the rear door and roof were specially modified to enhance the vehicle's functionality and iconic appearance.

Honouring a Long Tradition

Mercedes-Benz has been creating automotive transports for the Vatican since 1930, beginning with the Nürburg 460 Pullman Saloon for Pope Pius XI. Over the decades, the Popemobile evolved to meet modern needs, with models like the 300 Landaulet and the G-Class becoming integral to papal transport. This latest innovation continues a nearly century-old tradition, blending cutting-edge technology with bespoke craftsmanship.

The all-electric Popemobile not only marks a technological advancement but also emphasises a shared vision of sustainability between the Vatican and Mercedes-Benz.
