Christophe Cherix to Become Next Director of MoMA in September 2025
Christophe Cherix will succeed Glenn D. Lowry as MoMA's Director in September 2025, bringing visionary leadership and curatorial expertise.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has officially announced that Christophe Cherix will take on the role of David Rockefeller Director in September 2025, succeeding Glenn D. Lowry, who has led the museum for over two decades.
This appointment follows an extensive six-month international search, culminating in a unanimous decision by MoMA’s Board.
Cherix, who has been part of the MoMA family since 2007, brings with him a wealth of expertise and vision. His deep involvement with the museum’s curatorial staff, particularly in the realm of prints and drawings, has helped shape the museum’s celebrated exhibitions and collections. Since 2013, he has held the position of The Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints, a role he assumed after a significant restructuring at MoMA that merged the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books with the Department of Drawings.
His leadership in this area has been pivotal to the museum’s ability to expand its holdings and showcase leading contemporary and historical art movements.
Throughout his tenure, Cherix has curated a number of standout exhibitions that have solidified his reputation as a visionary in the art world. Notable exhibitions include ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN (2024), Betye Saar: Legends of Black Girl’s Window (2019), and Adrian Piper: A Synthesis of Institutions, 1965–2016 (2018). His exhibitions have consistently brought new perspectives to the forefront, blending artistic innovation with social and cultural significance.
Beyond curating exhibitions, Cherix has played a significant role in the acquisition of important collections that have enriched MoMA’s already renowned holdings. His efforts have resulted in the integration of collections such as the Merrill C. Berman Collection, the Herman and Nicole Daled Collection and Archives, and the Seth Siegelaub Collection and Archives, all of which have contributed to the museum’s standing as one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking art institutions in the world.
Cherix’s impressive academic background, including a degree in letters from the University of Geneva, complements his extensive curatorial experience. He was also a Fellow of the Class of 2010 at the Center for Curatorial Leadership in New York, where he had a residency at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
In welcoming Cherix to his new role, MoMA’s Board expressed confidence in his ability to continue the museum's legacy of excellence. As the museum embarks on its next chapter, Cherix’s leadership will be integral to advancing MoMA’s mission of bringing art and culture to a global audience in innovative and impactful ways.
Board President Sarah Arison added,
“Christophe’s excellence in scholarship, strong relationships with artists, and internationally respected research and publications distinguished him in an international pool of impressive candidates. We look forward to working together to support a smooth and substantive leadership transition, and to set the strongest possible foundation for MoMA’s continued success under his new leadership.”
Cherix’s appointment signals an exciting new phase for MoMA, as the museum looks to deepen its connection to the global art community while continuing to provide unparalleled access to groundbreaking art for future generations.
With his leadership, the institution is poised to navigate the dynamic changes shaping the art world and to remain at the forefront of cultural innovation.
