Christie’s is hosting its Modern British and Irish Art sales in London on October 16 and 17, as part of its prestigious 20th/21st Century Art auction series. These sales will feature exceptional British and Irish art from 1900 to the present, showcasing works by renowned artists such as Sir Stanley Spencer, L.S. Lowry, Dame Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, and more.
Highlights of the Evening Sale include Sir Stanley Spencer’s Wisteria at Englefield (1954), estimated at £800,000-1,200,000, and L.S. Lowry’s Senhouse Street, Maryport (1955), estimated at £700,000-1,000,000. The sale also features a painting by Sir Winston Churchill, Marrakech with a Camel (circa 1954), estimated at £600,000-800,000, which Churchill kept at his home throughout his life.
The auction also offers a stunning collection of sculptures by leading artists like Dame Barbara Hepworth and Lynn Chadwick. Hepworth’s Two Forms (Gemini II) (1966), carved from slate, is expected to fetch £400,000-600,000, while Chadwick’s Beast (1953), a significant large-scale work, carries an estimate of £700,000-1,000,000.
The Day Sale, on October 17, will feature pieces by artists such as Leon Kossoff, Frank Auerbach, and Henry Moore. It also includes two works auctioned to support the charity Outside In, which helps artists facing challenges due to health, disability, or isolation.
The public exhibition of these artworks will be held at Christie’s King Street in London from October 12 to 16.
