Christie's Auction: Jurassic Icons Allosaurus & Stegosaurus
Christie’s to auction three dinosaur fossils, including Allosaurus and Stegosaurus skeletons, on Dec 12 in London.
Christie’s London will host a live auction, Jurassic Icons: Allosaurus & Stegosaurus, on December 12, showcasing three remarkable dinosaur fossils dating back 157-145 million years. Highlights include:
- A pair of Allosaurus skeletons featuring both a juvenile and an adult specimen (estimated at £5-8 million). These fossils may provide insights into possible social behaviours or cooperative foraging patterns.
- A Stegosaurus skeleton, famed for its distinctive plates and spiked tail, with no reserve price (estimated at £3-5 million).
The Allosaurus, a dominant predator of the Late Jurassic, predates the Tyrannosaurus rex and is significant for its evolutionary and cultural impact. The Stegosaurus, an iconic herbivore, symbolises the Jurassic era.
James Hyslop, Head of Science & Natural History at Christie’s London, described the sale as a “once-in-a-lifetime moment.” The fossils will be exhibited at Christie’s King Street from December 7 to 12, free for public viewing.
Additionally, Christie’s Education will offer a free online talk about dinosaur discoveries and fossil preservation ahead of the auction.
