Christie's Auction: Antiquities
On February 4, Christie’s New York will host its highly anticipated Antiquities Auction, featuring an extraordinary selection of artefacts spanning ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Byzantine cultures. This remarkable sale offers a window into millennia of artistic and cultural achievements, with objects dating from the 3rd millennium BC to the 12th century AD.
Several standout treasures lead the auction, including an exceptional red-figured kylix, attributed to the Brygos Painter, and a Cycladic marble female figure from the early Spedos variety, circa 2600-2500 BC. Both pieces are estimated at $700,000-900,000. Equally captivating is an Egyptian Limestone Relief for Idu (estimate: $700,000-900,000) and an over-lifesized Roman marble bust of a bearded deity, estimated at $400,000-600,000.
Collectors of ancient jewellery will delight in rare offerings such as a pair of Attic gold earrings from the late Geometric period, circa 750-725 BC (estimate: $10,000-15,000), and a Greek gold and enamel earring set from the collection of Dr Jacob Hirsch. These exquisite pieces are part of a group formerly held by Ernst and Marthe Kofler-Truniger of Switzerland, adding layers of provenance to their historical significance.
With such a diverse and exceptional collection, Christie’s Antiquities Auction promises an unparalleled opportunity to own a piece of history.
