For over a century, Bugatti has symbolised technical mastery, precision, and artistry, values extending beyond its automotive innovations into fine watchmaking.

The French marque’s long-standing connection with horology has created some of the most luxurious and technically advanced timepieces ever made, inspired by its iconic designs.

Bugatti’s relationship with esteemed watchmakers dates back to 1925, when the Swiss brand Mido recognised the brand’s dedication to both performance and aesthetics.

This synergy led to the creation of a collection of timepieces that mirrored Bugatti’s distinctive design language, crafted in line with the vision of founder Ettore Bugatti.

These elegant Swiss watches embodied a blend of heritage, sophistication, and innovation values that have remained at the core of Bugatti’s automotive and horological pursuits.

Ettore Bugatti often gifted these exquisite timepieces to his most skilled drivers, mechanics, and family members. Limited to fewer than 100 pieces, these handcrafted watches featured gold cases shaped like Bugatti’s signature horseshoe grille, adorned with the iconic red ‘EB’ logo.

Designed to be both stylish and practical, they allowed drivers to easily read the time while keeping their hands on the wheel; an early testament to the seamless integration of watchmaking and motoring.

Bugatti’s presence in the world of horology extended further in 1932 when Ettore commissioned a series of dashboard clocks for the legendary Type 41 Royale, one of the most luxurious cars ever built. To match its grandeur, Bugatti turned to the renowned Swiss watchmaker Breguet.

The result was a collection of nine intricately crafted chronographs featuring a tachometer function to measure speed over time. These timepieces, with their distinctive ‘Spécial pour Bugatti’ inscriptions and Breguet’s signature pomme hands, were precision instruments that seamlessly complemented the Royale’s unparalleled engineering.

In a fitting tribute to this shared legacy, Breguet reacquired one of these original dashboard chronographs in 2016, reinforcing the deep connection between the two brands.

More than just a historical artefact, this timepiece epitomised Bugatti and Breguet’s shared pursuit of technical brilliance and refinement, reflecting Ettore Bugatti’s forward-thinking vision.

As Bugatti experienced a renaissance in the early 2000s, the marque sought watchmakers who could craft a timepiece as revolutionary as its Veyron hyper sports car. This led to a collaboration with Michel Parmigiani, whose expertise resulted in the groundbreaking Bugatti Type 370 timepiece.

Featuring an innovative side-mounted dial and a manually wound movement with a 10-day power reserve, the Type 370 was inspired by the Veyron’s engineering. It was a true ‘Driver’s Watch’ that redefined timekeeping, ultimately winning the prestigious ‘Watch of the Year’ award in 2006.

The success of this partnership continued for a decade, with subsequent timepieces honouring the technical prowess of the Veyron 16.4 and Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. These exclusive creations became highly coveted treasures in the world of haute horology, cementing Bugatti’s status as a name synonymous with innovation.

In 2019, Bugatti entered a new chapter in horological excellence through a collaboration with pioneering watchmaker Jacob & Co. Together, they embarked on a journey to push the boundaries of both form and function, resulting in timepieces that redefined mechanical complexity.

These creations, like Bugatti’s hyper sports cars, achieved an unprecedented level of mechanical beauty, precision, and artistry.

The partnership launched with the Twin Turbo Furious Bugatti Edition, an extraordinary timepiece that embodied Bugatti’s dedication to precision engineering.

Subsequent models, such as the Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon, incorporated a miniature engine block inspired by the marque’s legendary W16 engine. Meanwhile, the Jean Bugatti timepiece paid homage to Ettore Bugatti’s son, featuring one of the most sophisticated and complex chronographs ever created.

Bugatti’s relentless pursuit of perfection continues to drive its connection with fine watchmaking. In June 2024, the marque unveiled the Tourbillon hyper sports car, a feat of engineering designed to stand the test of time. Among its most striking features is an analogue instrument cluster developed in collaboration with master Swiss watchmakers.

Crafted with the same meticulous attention to detail as the finest timepieces, this skeletonised masterpiece comprises over 600 individual components made from titanium, sapphire, and ruby. Engineered to operate with astonishing precision, it remains fixed in place as the steering wheel rotates seamlessly around it, creating a breathtaking focal point within the vehicle.

Inspired by this automotive milestone, Jacob & Co. introduced the Bugatti Tourbillon timepiece. Limited to just 250 pieces, this exquisite watch incorporates ten key design elements drawn directly from the hyper sports car, including a front grille-inspired case and control-dial-like winding crowns.

At its heart lies a remarkable V16 engine block automaton, carved from a single block of transparent sapphire, showcasing a level of craftsmanship never before seen in watchmaking.

Bugatti and Jacob & Co.’s partnership continues to flourish, with a new edition of the Tourbillon watch set to debut in Geneva this April. This latest creation will once again celebrate the fusion of automotive excellence and horological innovation, showcasing the unparalleled synergy between two of the world’s most prestigious brands.

From the elegant timepieces of Mido in the 1920s to the modern marvels of Jacob & Co., Bugatti’s legacy in horology reflects its unwavering commitment to aesthetics, precision, and ultimate luxury.

Just as Bugatti’s hyper sports cars transcend the boundaries of motoring to become symbols of sophistication and timelessness, the watches it inspires are more than mere timekeeping instruments. They are masterpieces that honour the art of engineering, embodying the same passion and ingenuity that define every Bugatti creation.
