American Express and The Push to Shop Small in New Zealand
American Express is set to launch its annual Shop Small initiative in New Zealand this October, encouraging consumers to support local small businesses.
New Zealanders are being encouraged to champion their local small businesses as American Express rolls out its annual Shop Small initiative this October, offering rewards for both consumers and the businesses that take part.
Now in its fifth year in New Zealand, Shop Small is a countrywide movement that highlights the vital role small businesses play in the economy, urging shoppers to support them while enjoying exclusive perks. Running from October 1 to November 10, eligible American Express cardholders who spend $10 or more at participating businesses will receive a $5 credit, redeemable up to five times.
New Zealand boasts over 500,000 small businesses, making up a staggering 97% of all enterprises. Collectively, they contribute more than a quarter of the nation’s GDP and provide nearly 30% of all jobs in Aotearoa.
Rob Bourne, American Express New Zealand’s Country Manager, emphasized the campaign's goal of celebrating small businesses and their crucial contributions to local communities. “Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and their success strengthens our neighbourhood and job markets”, said Bourne. “We’re proud to support these enterprises and encourage all New Zealanders to do the same—whether it’s buying a coffee or picking up a pair of shoes, every purchase makes a difference.”
Small businesses can greatly benefit from participating in the Shop Small campaign. American Express Card Members have 2.9 times more spending power compared to the average New Zealand credit and charge card holder, which means they can significantly impact your business growth. Additionally, 70% of American Express Card Members actively seek out businesses that display signs indicating they accept American Express before making a purchase.
