A Dinner at Le Procope: Parisian History Served on a Plate
Dining at Le Procope, Paris' oldest restaurant, offers a blend of history, charm, and exquisite cuisine. A must-visit for food and history lovers.
If you’re planning a trip to Paris, dining at Le Procope, the oldest restaurant in the city, is an experience worth savouring. Located in the 6ème arrondissement, just a 15-minute walk from Notre Dame, this historical gem has been serving patrons since 1686, making it a living testament to centuries of culinary tradition.
Our visit to Le Procope was nothing short of magical, enhanced by the twinkling Christmas lights that adorned the Parisian streets. From the moment we stepped inside, the experience transported us back in time. At the reception, we were warmly welcomed, and our coats were taken with care. The ambiance immediately captivates you; while waiting to ascend the stairs, you’re invited to admire portraits of the many famous figures who have dined here over the years. A highlight of this gallery is Napoleon’s hat, a relic that evokes the grandeur and intrigue of French history.
The decor of Le Procope strikes a remarkable balance between opulent old-world charm and the sleek sophistication of modern French cuisine. This duality extends to the menu, where you’ll find dishes that harken back to the 17th century, such as calf’s head—a nod to the era of the restaurant’s founding nearly 340 years ago.
Once seated, the true magic of the restaurant begins to unfold. The servers move swiftly through the dining rooms, maintaining an atmosphere that feels both lively and steeped in tradition. Despite its grandeur, Le Procope exudes a surprising simplicity, making it a place where you feel both pampered and at ease.
We opted for the Menu Procope, priced at a very reasonable €25 for a main course and dessert. While the risotto we ordered was light, its flavours were exquisite—delicate yet satisfying. The braised beef with gratin, however, was the star of the evening, offering a rich and comforting taste that truly elevated the meal.
As for the wine list, it’s a classic selection, but we would advise steering clear of the more budget-friendly options. Investing in a mid-range bottle can make a significant difference in complementing the dishes.
Le Procope is more than just a restaurant—it’s a slice of history served with a side of culinary excellence. Whether you’re a lover of French culture, history, or simply exceptional food, dining here is a must-do on any Paris itinerary.
